What is a Passport?


A Passport is an official travel document issued by the Ministry of External Affairs under the government of India for all those people who wish to travel out of the country for luxury trips, pilgrimages, business tours, medical travels, educational goals, etc.

Types of Passport


Any person who is traveling beyond the country's borders requires a valid passport or a travel document. There are 3 different types of passports depending on their usability:-

Ordinary / Blue passport


The passports belonging to this category contain 36/60 pages and are issued to civilians. The passports of adults are valid for 10 years, while the passports of children are reissued every 5 years till they reach the age of 18 years.

Diplomatic/ White passport


This passport is issued to all the gazetted government officers who need to go outside the country for official work.

Official/ Maroon passport


This passport is issued to senior government officials when they are traveling abroad for highly confidential and official work. The holders of passports do not require any visa formalities for traveling abroad and their immigration formalities are an easily done task as compared to others.

Documents required for Passport Application


The list of basic documents required while applying for a Passport is-:

  • Any valid Date of Birth proof issued by a registered authority such as Municipal office or registrar.

  • PAN card of the applicant

  • Transfer certificate issued by a recognized authority.

  • AADHAR card of the applicant

  • Valid Driving License of the applicant

  • Valid Voter ID card issued by the Election Commission of India

  • In case the applicant is a minor and belongs to the orphanage, a confirmation letter declaring the date of the birth of the applicant should be attached.

  • Water bill

  • Electricity bill

  • Bank Account statement of the applicant

  • Matriculation or any higher education certificate of the applicant.



Who are the Passport Issuing Authorities


At present, there is a channel of 36 Passport Offices in India, CPV divisions, which are reserved for government Diplomats and officials at the Andaman and Nicobar Island administrations. The channel has grown further with the addition of 93 passport Seva Kendra and 412 Post Office Passport Seva Kendra.
